10.7 million for public AI in primary and secondary education, and why schools don’t have to wait
Pascal Mariany, founder of CivAI, wrote on LinkedIn about the public AI provision for primary and secondary education included in the OCW budget for 2027. Below is his text, with the one-pager for school boards available for download.
There will be €10.7 million allocated for public AI in primary and secondary education. I am genuinely pleased about this.
It is written in black and white in the OCW budget for 2027. Kennisnet will receive the funding to develop a secure AI provision for primary and secondary education together with SURF, SIVON, and NOLAI, in which schools themselves decide which AI they use and under what conditions.
As a teacher and a builder, I have learned two things about such environments over the past few years.
The model is the inexpensive part. The real work lies in policy per board, pupil accounts, a helpdesk that actually answers, and teachers who know what they are doing.
And the hardest step is not the pilot, but the daily use afterwards. We have also noticed this from the practical experience we have gained with EduGPT at more than 35 schools and institutions.
That is why I hope for three things. An open architecture in which schools can truly choose. A market consultation before anything is built. And schools that do not wait three years, because pupils are already using AI today.
