EduGPT used in AI literacy lesson on art, Congo and social justice

EduGPT used in AI literacy lesson on art, Congo and social justice | CivAI News

NewTechKids, in collaboration with the H’ART Museum in Amsterdam, delivered a special AI literacy lesson for pupils in primary education. During the lesson, EduGPT was used as a Socratic AI chatbot to encourage pupils to think critically about art, social justice, and the impact of human actions on the environment.

The lesson was linked to the exhibition The Land of Chocolate Sprinkles. Building a new world together at the H’ART Museum. This exhibition shows how an artists’ collective in Congo creates chocolate sculptures to draw attention to the human and ecological damage caused by multinationals in Congo. With the proceeds from these sculptures, the artists buy back land, restore nature, and cultivate food crops.

For this lesson, NewTechKids developed a special curriculum module in EduGPT, based on educational material from the museum. The AI chatbot did not give pupils direct answers, but asked questions that helped them think further. This created space for discussion about art as a form of expression, activism, and social change.

An important insight from the lesson was that responsible AI use also means consciously choosing when not to use AI. In a next version of the lesson, NewTechKids will therefore have pupils make their own paper or digital sketch, instead of generating an image with AI. Precisely because human imagination, creativity, and expression are central to the story of the Congolese artists.

For CivAI and EduGPT, this is a valuable example of how AI can be used in education: not as a replacement for thinking, making, or imagining, but as a companion that asks questions, deepens conversations, and helps pupils form their own judgement.

We thank Deborah Carter and NewTechKids for their trust in EduGPT, and H’ART Museum for providing the educational context for this meaningful lesson.
