This week, the OECD and the European Commission published a new guide for teachers, "Navigating AI in Education, A Cross-Subject Guide for Teachers and Educators". It is the practical supplement to the international AI Literacy Framework (AILit).

What immediately struck us at CivAI is how closely the conclusions align with what we have been working on for some time. Not AI that takes over the thinking, but AI that actually sharpens the thinking.

The key points from the guide

For mathematics, it is succinctly formulated. The aim is not for AI to replace mathematical understanding, but for mathematical understanding to strengthen students’ ability to assess AI. Replace mathematics with any other subject and you have the EduGPT philosophy in a nutshell.

For science, there is a similar warning. A hypothesis suggested by AI is a starting point for further investigation, not a final conclusion. Exactly the difference between a ready-made answer and an invitation to think further for yourself.

The guide is also honest about the risks. AI systems are not culturally neutral; they are built within a certain context and carry the language, values, and assumptions of their developers with them. For a European platform like EduGPT, that is precisely the reason why sovereignty matters.

On accessibility, the guide is just as clear. AI literacy should be a right for all students, not a privilege for schools with a budget. We recognise that, as it is exactly why we have never wanted to offer AI literacy as a separate, expensive course.

The biggest challenge is not the technology, but the teacher

The researchers cite teacher confidence and professional development as the biggest bottleneck. Many teachers have never had the opportunity to build up their own AI literacy and feel uncertain about something that seems large and technical.

Their solution fits seamlessly with how we have set up EduGPT. Building knowledge in small steps, practising in a safe environment, and sharing experiences with colleagues.

The most important sentence from the report

Right at the end is the conclusion that we find most valuable. AI literacy arises from sustained, deliberate practice. Not from a single lesson, but through repetition, reflection, and application in practice.

The guide also works with three types of questions that teachers can continually have their students ask during an AI interaction. In the moment: what is this system actually doing here? Upon reflection: what does this mean for my own way of working? In the longer term: who actually benefits from this system working in this way?

That is precisely the questioning, guiding approach in which we believe. Not demonstrating, but asking questions, so that students and teachers continue to do the thinking themselves.
