Open learning materials from Edusources and Edurep now directly in EduGPT | CivAI News

Big news for everyone working with EduGPT. Edusources and Edurep are now linked to EduGPT, the secure European AI chat environment for education. This allows you to search and query public teaching materials for almost every educational level in the Netherlands, directly from the chat.

In this new knowledge clip, our CEO and Co-founder Pascal Mariany demonstrates how it works.

What you’ll see in the knowledge clip

Pascal asks a question in the EduGPT Teacher chat about AI literacy for higher education lecturers. EduGPT retrieves the most relevant open sources via Edusources, with a clickable link to the material.

He then activates Edurep, selects a different AI model, and searches for teaching materials about fractions for Year 6. You can see exactly which tool was used and where the search took place, so you can verify every answer.

Finally, he shows that you can also use the same link in your own AI companion. As an example, a companion about Cicero for secondary education, with custom teaching materials alongside public sources.

How the integration works

The integration runs via MCP, the Model Context Protocol. This is an open standard that allows an AI environment to securely connect to external sources. EduGPT retrieves search results from Edusources and Edurep and displays them in the chat with source attribution. The material itself remains at the original source.

Edusources is SURF’s platform for open educational resources, made possible in part by the European Union. Edurep is Kennisnet’s search service for teaching materials in primary and secondary education. Thanks to the developers of both services, who made this integration possible.

Why this matters

Open educational resources under a Creative Commons licence may be freely used, adapted, and shared. Copyright is no longer a grey area. Sharing is caring, and that fits with our vision of education.

For schools and institutions, this means that teachers and lecturers no longer have to choose between an AI assistant and reliable teaching materials. They get both in one environment, with the teacher in control. The AI searches and organises, the education professional evaluates and selects.

EduGPT operates entirely within Europe. Your data is stored in Europe and stays there. Especially in an era of AI, that is a conscious choice.
