The AI Literacy Companion renewed, with a European AI mentor and a bridge to CivAI Academy

The AI Literacy Companion renewed, with a European AI mentor and a bridge to CivAI Academy | CivAI News

Do you know how AI-literate you are? With the AI Literacy Companion, you can find out in just a few minutes. This free self-assessment from Onderwijs Orakel is available at ailiteracycompanion.eu and received a major update this week.

A new design, an AI mentor now running on an open language model in Europe, and a direct link to the free e-learning from CivAI Academy.

This is how the self-assessment works

You answer ten short questions, or you can choose the extended test with 34 questions. For each question, you indicate on a scale of 1 to 5 how familiar you are with the topic.

The questions are based on the Meta AI Literacy Scale, a scientifically validated questionnaire by Carolus and colleagues (2023). Afterwards, you will see your profile per domain, from knowledge and understanding to critical thinking and ethics. You can download this profile as a PNG or PDF, or print it.

For each question, you choose a score from 1 to 5, with an example provided.

A new look

The site has been completely redesigned, in a calm glass style using the colours of the logo. It works smoothly on phone, tablet, and laptop, in both light and dark modes. At the top, you can always see how many questions you have already answered.

An AI mentor running in Europe

After the questionnaire, you talk to an AI mentor who knows your profile. For example, you can ask where best to start, or have a four-week learning plan created for you. The mentor first highlights your strengths and then identifies your greatest opportunities for growth.

This mentor initially ran on Microsoft Azure. Now it uses Gemma 4, an open language model, with our European partner Scaleway in Paris. The site itself is also hosted on a European server. Especially in an age of AI, I think it is important to show that this is perfectly possible.

Your answers and scores remain in your own browser. If you ask the mentor a question, your message and score profile are sent to the language model, but we do not store these conversations. There are no cookies and no trackers.

You remain in control

The self-assessment follows the HEAR model from my book The Art of Living Together with AI. It starts with you, as you first indicate where you stand. The mentor then thinks along with you and encourages you to check every AI answer.

What you do with the advice is up to you. The final judgement remains with the human.

From self-assessment to e-learning

New is the link with CivAI Academy, our free e-learning on AI literacy. The two reinforce each other. In the academy’s welcome lesson, you take the self-assessment as a baseline measurement, and at the end you do it again. That way, you can see what you have learned.

Conversely, the AI Literacy Companion now directs you to the academy. Under the mentor, there is a direct link, and the mentor recommends the academy if you want to continue learning independently. There you will find short lessons for pupils, students, and teachers, free of charge and without an account. All chapters are now online.

Created together

The AI Literacy Companion is a tool from Onderwijs Orakel, built with Mariany Design and made possible by CivAI. Together, we are working towards the same goal: making everyone in education AI-literate.

Take the self-assessment at ailiteracycompanion.eu and continue learning at academy.civai.eu. I am curious to know where you stand, and which question you will ask the mentor first.
